5 Looks For Harvest Festivals

Umpteen names to call this festival. Umpteen ways to dress up for it.

I know that we have already started the first round of festivals this brand new year and staring straight at Makar Sankranti. Baffled with the umpteen looks that we Indian carry during Sankranti? This is one festival where we like to give a regional touch to our looks. While some would like to stick to traditions followed in their regions, I am sure some of us experiment with looks from various regions. So here we bring five different looks from various states of India. Pin it. Save it. Get inspired.

Let’s start down up.

Sankranti is celebrated as Pongal in the Southern part of India. You’ll see yards of flowing Kanjeevarams, heavy silks, and blends, like cotton silks or pure cotton sarees this festival. These are accentuated with flowers in the hair, and temple jewelry to go with it. The belt is teamed with the saree for an elegant, organized, pleated look. Add a boxy clutch and stylish kolhapuri footwear to modernize the look. You are good to go gal!

Maharastra comes next and there’s something different about Sankranti here. Black is not a preferred choice for auspicious occasions in India. Not here though. The norm is surpassed only for Sankranti and it’s a favored color instead. A saree in black and gold teamed with gold jewelry, bangles, and sequenced footwear contrasted with a uber-cool golden metal bag spells magic. Try this one out!

A walk uphill and we reach Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand where the festival is called Uttarayan referring to the movement of the Sun to the Northern Hemisphere. Benarasi is the weave of celebration in this region. However, Georgettes, silk blends, Chiffons, etc. are also welcome with open arms. Lehenga or Saree, the festive fervor is marked in the choicest jewelry, heeled sandals, and a velvet Potli bag. Glamorize that look with your smile darling!

Off to the east, and we land in Assam celebrating Bihu in their signature Paat and Mooga Silks. Blends are welcome too. Distinct woven designs and tribal motifs are so to this region. Add some tribal jewelry, and an embellished hair accessory like a hair band, hold a clutch and see the world showering compliments on you.

Ah, finally we reach the Himalaya-clad head of the country. Yes, we are in Punjab. Known for fashion and bright colors, this region sees some of the coldest days due to Lohri being the last day of the winter solstice. Heavy Kurta sets then not only become fashion statements but also provide some warmth. Adding layers helps. Thus capes, heavy earrings, and a matching head accessory make you feel festive. Try the look and see your insta ratings shoot up.

That’s the flavor of Makar Sankranti. Not only the looks different. There’s a flavor of unity in the diversity Festival that is known by almost 18 unique names and celebrates the movement of the Sun from Sagittarius (Dhanu) to Capricorn (Makar). The festival is celebrated in myriad ways ranging from flying kites, to dancing across bonfires. Celebrate this festival in the true spirit of unity vivified with fashion and style.
